Sinai’s Threads of Tikva
Knitters worldwide are once again taking up their needles to ensure the heads of the Israeli Defense Force are covered. Although Israel is in the Middle East, the desert gets cold at night in the winter and a hat is a very welcome addition to any soldier's gear. The hats must be a basic rib-knitted watch cap in black worsted weight yarn, preferably a washable wool. No other color will do, and they cannot be crocheted. Wool is preferable to a synthetic, which might melt if exposed to high heat.
Recommended yarn is Cascade Superwash 220, available at most yarn shops or online. Yarn.com seems to have the best price. One ball will make one hat with some remaining and by the time five hats are knitted there are usually enough leftover ends to make a sixth. Want to get started? Instructions are attached. Finished hats can be dropped off to the collection box at Sinai to send to Israel in small batches.
Are your needles rusty? Project Chair, Alyssa is happy to give a refresher, or to teach her secret method of casting on in the round with no gaps. Need to borrow needles? That's possible too! Are you a total beginner, just getting started? Pour some tea and pull up a chair - she can teach you the basics. Get in touch with Alyssa at therealalyssamandel@gmail.com. Look for drop in knitting sessions in early fall.
Want to help but can't knit? Donate money for yarn, needles and/or shipping costs, and tell your friends. We can all do a mitzvah in time for Rosh Hashanah and ensure Israeli soldiers feel some love and warmth from far away.
Tabs for Souls – A Holocaust Memorial Project
A temple 7th Grade class studying the Holocaust and inspired by watching the movie Paperclips, started a campaign to collect 6 million aluminum tabs in memory of the Jewish lives that perished during the Holocaust.
And now, today, thanks to temple members and our many, many friends locally and around the country who have donated tabs of all sizes and colors, we have collected almost 4 million tabs and are eager to keep those donations coming.
How you can help:
🔹 Collect aluminum tabs and bring them to Temple Sinai. Any size, any color, from drinks, soup cans, fruit cans, cat food – wherever!
🔹 Drop your donations off at Temple Sinai. There are collection containers throughout the temple for either loose tabs or baggies full.
🔹 Spread the word to friends, schools, and local businesses. We have discovered that once your friends know you’re collecting tabs they often begin as well. Thank you cards are sent out for all donations that come with a name and address.Started by Reb Ari Shapiro, z”l and now organized by Sue Huntting, shuntting@aol.com
