The "Nation-State" Basic Law at the Israel Supreme Court

BACKGROUND: On December 22nd, 2020, Israel 's High Court held a nine-hour hearing on the validity of the Nation-State Law. Arguments were made by numerous Petitioners and the Government. Professor Suzie Navot, one of Israel's leading constitutional scholars attended the session and she will discuss the arguments made by both sides and her view of the ultimate outcome. This legal confrontation in Israel is one of the most fascinating constitutional law debates taking place today.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Professor Suzie Navot is a full Professor at the Striks Law School – College of Management in Israel. She holds an LL.B degree (cum laude) from Tel-Aviv University, an MA in Public Policy (cum laude) from Tel-Aviv University and a LL.D from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her areas of research include constitutional law, parliamentary law and political law and she has published two books and over seventy articles in different languages. She is the former Chairperson of the Israeli Association of Public Law and was a member of several public commissions. Prof. Navot was awarded several prices and awards, the last one in 2020 by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel. Prof. Navot speaks Hebrew, English, French and Spanish. She is also known as a senior legal commentator for the Israeli public and media on constitutional and political legal issues.

Stephen Greenwald serves as President of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists and as Vice-President and Board Member of the International Association based in Israel. He is also member of the Board of the New York University Law School Alumni Association and was the recipient of The Thurgood Marshall Award from the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and The Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund.

Stanley Fink is a NJ native; he received his B.A. degree from Marietta College in OH, followed by an LL.B/JD from Washington & Lee University School of Law in VA. He was a founding partner of the law firm of Kiernan & Fink, in Clark, NJ. That office eventually evolved into the present firm of FINK ROSNER ERSHOW-LEVENBERG, LLC, from which Stan retired in late December 2017. His practice for almost 53 years was primarily in real estate, land use, and probate. During his career in the practice of law in NJ Stan received several awards including the real estate attorney of the year Award from the Real Property Trust & Estates section of the NJ State Bar Association, the first Real Estate Attorney of the year awarded by the Union County Bar Association (of which he served as President in 1984), and the Professional Lawyer of the Year award from the UCBA and the NJ Commission on Professionalism in the Law. He is Congregation Anshe Chesed's representative to the ad hoc Central NJ Israel Support Committee, and serves on his synagogue’s Board of Directors. Stan has been a member of the IAJLJ and the AAJLJ for more than 25 years, presently serving as Treasurer on the Board of the AAJLJ.

Harold Halpern received his JD from University Buffalo 1958, cum laude. He is admitted to practice in NY and FL. He served as Chair of the NY State Bar Committee on Professional Discipline. His areas of practice include Commercial Litigation, Commercial Real Estate, Native American representation, Appellate Practice State and Federal Courts. He practiced at the firm of Borins, Halpern, Stromberg & Paskowitz for over 40 years. Harold is a Board Member of the AAJLJ and of the American Jewish Committee, West Coast Florida AJC. He is a recipient of the Benderson Community Service Award from Buffalo Jewish Federation, Community Relations Award from the AJC, Buffalo, and Community Service Award from the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, Buffalo. Harold was President of Kadimah, Buffalo Day School, and of the Buffalo Bureau of Jewish Education.
