Movie: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (Netflix)

For our March film, we have chosen Ma Rainey's Black Bottom available on Netflix - staring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman.  Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the film a 99%, while audiences gave it an 80.  

A word about our choice: You may find it a difficult film to watch, but it is a powerful and important film. Those of you who saw it at the West Coast Black Coast Theater should find it a far superior production. The makeup and costumes and performances by Davis and Boseman alone make it a must see.

For a deeper appreciation of the film and the work of August Wilson, we strongly urge you to watch Giving Voice also on Netflix.  It's a documentary of high school students competing in the 10th annual national August Wilson Monologue Competition and features appearances by Viola Davis and Denzel Washington and clips of August Wilson.
