Through the Looking Glass: Widen Your View of Jewish Oppression as Expressed Through the Lens of Various Forms of the Performing Arts

Chazzan Abramson will curate a deep discussion examining the intersection between oppression and bias comparing the film documentary, The People v. Leo Frank and the Tony award-winning Broadway musical, Parade. Both art forms tell the true story of Jewish-American businessman, Leo Frank, who was accused and convicted of murdering a child laborer, Mary Phagan in 1913 in Atlanta, GA. Appeals were made and rebuffed all the way through to the Supreme Court but Frank's sentence was eventually commuted from death to life imprisonment by outgoing Governor John Slaton in April 1915. Just four months later he was abducted and lynched by a mob of men in Marietta, GA.
