7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

This is the 2nd offering in Temple Sinai's ReJEWvenate Series.

From Moses to Tiffany Haddish: How Comedy has Influenced and Reflected  the Jewish Experience

Presenter:  Rabbi Toby Manewith

Description: Moses is not well known for his hilarious timing, and studying our sacred texts had never been accompanied by a rim shot. But, as far back as the Torah, Jews have been using comedic devices to both understand and explain their circumstances. In this hour-long course, we will look at how Jews and Judaism shaped comedy and how comedy influenced and sustained Jews. We will look at ancient texts, a few cartoons, some video clips and may even have time for a few jokes.

Presenter Bio: Rabbi Toby Manewith has been actively involved in Jewish life since the first time she was allowed to run the cotton candy machine at the JCC Purim Carnival (and maybe before). She has worked in almost every facet of Jewish communal life. She began her career as a Hillel Director and Jewish Educator. She has worked in congregations both as a member of the clergy and as the Director of Lifelong Learning. Throughout her career she has written curriculum including work for Rosh Hodesh: It's a Girl Thing, the National Building Museum, Reform synagogues across the country. as well as JTeach, an online resource center for religious school teachers. She is most proud of the work with 2nd Nurture, making connections between adoption and Jewish holidays. Manewith graduated from Northwestern majoring in both political science and religion and was ordained in 1993. She is a Cubs fan, makes excellent gluten free brownies, knows how to juggle and once, she extinguished the Eternal Light, its kind of a funny story.

The ReJEWvenate series is designed to unlock Jewish hearts and fill them with fun as they explore different aspects of Jewish culture.  Learn from Rabbis and educators about a variety of fascinating topics during this exciting series on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, beginning Tuesday, February 9 and continuing through March 30, 2021.
